About the project

Silent Recall is a short film we made for nobody but ourselves. No client, no brief, no unit mix to feature. Once a year the studio makes one of these and budgets it like paid work, because it is the only place we get to say something with nobody to please.

It won Best Non-Commissioned Film at the CGarchitect 3D Awards 2025 in Warsaw, the 21st edition, from more than 1,100 entries. Six of the seven category winners that year were European studios. We were the only one from Southeast Asia.

We did not set out to win anything. We set out to make something we would still want to watch in five years.

Story

A man goes back to Bromo. He is looking for Tanatap Sunrise, a place where architecture and landscape once met, and where decades earlier he watched the Barong Tengger Fire Dance and never quite got over it.

What he finds is a ruin. But walking through it, the thing comes back in pieces. The rhythm. The fire. The feeling in the crowd. The tradition has gone quiet, and somehow it is all still there.

The film is about memory, and how a culture keeps living inside the people who witnessed it.

Process and solutions

The environments were built in-house in 3D. The human presence came through a greenscreen workflow, composited until the digital and the filmed stopped being separable.

AI did more than pixels here. It shaped the music, the voice and part of the writing, and generated footage that carried the emotional register between scenes. A tool inside the edit, not a shortcut around it.

We stopped looking at archviz references early. The board filled up with lifestyle film and brand storytelling instead, which is most of the reason the film does not move like a walkthrough.
